New 585 area code
for the Western New York Region
becomes permanant on August 17, 2002

On August 17, 2002, the new 585 area code will become permanant for all customers residing in the Western New York counties of Orleans, Genesee, Monroe, Wyoming and parts of Livingston, Ontario, Yates, Steuben and Allegany. Customers in Cattaraugus, Chautauqua, Erie and Niagara and the Tonawanda Reservation and the Oil Springs Reservation will keep their existing 716 area code and their 7-digit phone number. The new 585 area code will be used for all telephone services, including cellular phones and pagers.

Will my phone number change?

No. There are no changes to a customer’s 7-digit telephone number due to the new area code.


When does the new 585 area code become permanent?

The 585 area code becomes permanent on August 17, 2002. On that date, all calls to customers in the counties of Orleans, Genesee, Monroe, Wyoming and parts of Livingston, Ontario, Yates, Steuben and Allegany from the 716, 315, 607, and other area codes must be dialed using 1 + 585 + the 7-digit telephone number. Otherwise, the caller will reach a recorded announcement with a reminder to dial again using the correct area code.


Will calls to the new 585 area code from area codes 716, 315, and 607 cost more?

No. Current rates will still apply for all calls between the new 585 and 716, 315, and 607 area codes. These calls are still local or regional calls, not long distance.

Is 911 affected?

No. 911 will not be affected. You will still be able to call 911 for emergency services.

Can I call Directory Assistance to get numbers in area codes 585 and 716?

Yes. Directory Assistance will not be affected by the new area code. Listed numbers in 585 and 716 will be available through Directory Assistance and the Verizon White Pages.
