Division of Highways
Deputy Commissioner, Highways
858-8306
Under the Department of Public Works, the Division of Highways is responsible for the construction, maintenance, and plowing of 1,169 centerline miles of road in the county. The county by far has the most miles of road of any county in the state to care for. It's estimated that it would take $500 million to repair every road in need.
Since 1988 Erie County has spent $84 million repairing roads and bridges. A reconstructed road will last for 20 years, a rebuilt bridge will last for 50 years but many of the county's 250 bridges date back to the 1920's.
FAST FACT: Over the past six years the county has rebuilt 60 bridges.
