The State of New York through its Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) delegates responsibilities for motor vehicle registrations, drivers' licenses and related services to most counties, including Erie. The DMV can be accessed via internet: www.nysdmv.com

All Enforcement and Testing Sections close 1 hour before the Office closes.
Auto Bureau Offices are closed on the Saturdays preceeding Monday holidays and: New Year's Day; Martin Luther King, Jr. Day; President's Day; Good Friday; Memorial Day; Independence Day; Labor Day; Columbus Day; Election Day; Veterans' Day; Thanksgiving Day; Christmas.
The services provided at the Auto Bureau include:
- Renewals for operator and motorcycle licenses, permits, and non-driver identification (ID) cards.
- CDL renewals (except for Hazmat or towing endorsements)
- Written tests for operators and motorcycle permits
- Duplicates for all types of licenses, permits and non-driver ID cards
- Amendments to all types of licenses, permits and non-driver ID cards
- Conversion of out-of-state driver licenses to New York
- Renewals of registrations
- New plates for passenger and commercial vehicles, trailers and motorcycles
- Duplicate plates for passenger and commercial vehicles, trailers and motorcycles
- Amendment to registrations for all vehicle types
- Plate transfers from one vehicle to another for all vehicle types
- Plate surrenders
- Enforcement matters including DWI, child support payments, insurance lapses
