Erie County Clerk's Office Launches "Starting Your New Business" Directory

As your County Clerk, I am always looking for ways to help our citizens interested in starting a new business in Erie County. I'm proud to say that starting a business begins right here in the Erie County Clerk's Office where you will research and register your company's name which will lay the foundation of your new company.

Starting a business can be a long and detailed process but with the right resources it does not have to be a frustrating or tedious one. That is why I have created a "Starting Your New Business" directory of resources and answers to questions that will now be available to our residents when they visit the DBA/Corporations Department in the basement of the County Clerk's Office at 92 Frankin St. to file their DBA with the County or by calling 858-8865.

Customers will find useful information on filing the proper permits, IRS resources and many links to helpful websites. The County Clerk's website, www.erie.gov/clerk also provides information on what is required when customers come to the Clerk's Office to file your business certificate. My goal is to make the process of starting a new business as smooth and simple for everyone.

In 2007, the Erie County Clerk's Office processed more than 3,800 "Doing Business As" (DBA) certificates and I am encouraged by the number of new businesses that are being established in our region. This is promising news for Erie County since small businesses are responsible for over 90% of the new jobs created. I believe that a strong and vibrant small business community will be the catalyst to stimulate the economy in Western New York and I want to do everything I can to make them successful by making this new directory of resources easily available to them.
