Erie County Clerk Advises Drivers to Avoid License Fee Increase By Applying for an Enhanced Driver's License Now

Proposal Would Up License Fee 25%

Now more than ever, Erie County Clerk Kathy Hochul says Erie County residents should obtain their Enhanced Driver's Licenses (EDL) before the proposed DMV fee increases go into effect. For months, Hochul has been warning that the State Budget crisis could result in higher DMV fees. "I've been all over Erie County telling groups and individuals of the possibility of increased fees and advising them to lock-in at today's prices. Drivers who come in now for an 8 year, dual purpose Enhanced Driver's License will receive credit for all the time remaining on their existing license," said Hochul.

Beginning in June 2009, the Department of Homeland Security will require travelers to have either a Passport or an Enhanced Driver's License (EDL) or Enhanced non-driver ID Card for land/sea travel to Canada, Mexico, Bermuda and the Caribbean. "With so many Erie County residents being regular visitors to Canada, I am urging them to take advantage of the shorter wait times at this time of year at our Auto Bureaus, as well as avoiding next year's fee increase in applying for an EDL now said Hochul.

"I recommend that everyone interested in applying for an EDL visit www.erie.gov/clerk and click the Enhanced License icon. This will ensure that County residents know the locations and hours to apply for EDL's, as well as the proper original documentation needed to complete the application. Smart consumers will jump on this now," says Hochul.
