LAD receives referrals from various units within
the Department of Social Services and from outside sources.
Persons referred to LAD have their cases
assigned to a paralegal for investigation by the directing attorney.
Paralegals schedule and conduct detailed
interviews to determine which application is appropriate, SSI and/or SSD.
If a case is opened, the paralegal works in
conjunction with the applicant and the Social Security Disability Determination Unit
assisting at all steps of the application and appeals process.
LAD re-reviews all submitted applications at every level of the
decision-making process in order to determine the merits and appropriateness
for future appeals.
Applicants must
sign a form appointing LAD as their legal representative for the
disability claim, various application and appeal forms, and release of records
and information forms.
