The Division of Planning supports constituent municipalities by coordinating local planning and land use inventory. This page briefly describes various programs that the Division undertakes, and highlights several large projects that will be accomplished in 2010. Among the programs that the Division is involved in are the following:

• The Division has statutory responsibility for reviewing and advising on zoning cases which come before the Department under NYS General Municipal Law. In 2009, the Division acted on more than 700 referrals from municipalities.
• The agricultural industry is one of the largest components of the County's economy. The Planning Division has undertaken several studies that are related to protecting the viability of agriculture, and is involved in the creation and recertification of the Agricultural Districts found throughout the rural areas of the County. In 2010 the Planning Division will complete the recertification process for the Wales District.

2010 Programs - Division Of Planning

• A comprehensive signage system will be developed for the Niagara River Greenway. This will isur that municipalities and others developing public space withi the Greenway are linked with common identifying markers.
• The study to determine the feasibility of certain features contained in the citizen driven Black Rock Canal Park Concept Plan will be completed in early 2010. It is expected that Phase I improvements to the Park will commence in 2011.
• A Framework for Regional Growth manual for County departments and related agencies will be completed in March 2010. This will better inform these organizations about how the policies contained in the Framework for Regional Growth should be utilized during their daily decision making process.
