What is I&I? Infiltration and Inflow is clean storm and/or groundwater that enters the sanitary sewer system through holes, breaks, joint failures, connection failures, illegally connected sump pumps, down spouts, and footing drains, and from cross-connections with storm sewers. Most inflow comes from storm water and most infiltration comes from groundwater. High groundwater levels and storm events can contribute to excessive sewer flows.
I/I affects the size of flow conveyed through the system and pumping stations and the cost to treat the flows. Ultimately, this affects the taxes businesses and residents pay to operate and maintain the sewers.
DSM maintains a proactive approach to sanitary sewer maintenance and has a Division wide I&I program to minimize and eliminate extraneous storm water from entering the sanitary sewer system. The I&I program includes manhole GPS, inspections and repairs; internal sewerline flushing and televising, and smoke testing to determine deficiencies and their degree of severity; along with spot pipe repairs and internal sliplining; and house to house inspections to verify and correct the sanitary sewer connections.
For more information on the DSM's I&I program, contact (716) 858-8437.
For information and/or to schedule an educational seminar/presentation for your community group or class, contact (716) 858-6586.
This presentation will give a general overview of how and why wastewater from your home is collected and subsequently treated. The presentation will follow the path of wastewater from your home back into the environment. This complex journey is many times forgotten after a person has flushed a toilet, washed dishes or laundry, brushed his or her teeth, etc. It should provide a better understating of this critical service that is provided by the DSM.
The Erie County Water Authority provides water to a majority of people within Erie County. However, the Water Authority is not a part of Erie County Government. They can be reached at their offices at (716) 849-8484.
All information regarding septic tanks should be directed to the Erie County Health Department at (716) 858-7677.
