Expedited Partner Therapy (EPT)

EPT InfographicEPT FlyerWhat is EPT?

EPT stands for Expedited Partner Therapy.  EPT is the clinical practice of treating the sex partners of patients diagnosed with chlamydia, gonorrhea or trichomoniasis by providing prescriptions or medications to the patient to take to his/her partner without the health care provider having to first examine the partner.

How does EPT work?

  • In order to prevent reinfection and to curtail further transmission of sexually transmitted infection, it is recommended to treat the sex partners of those that are currently infected and being treated.  The standard approach to partner treatment has required a clinical evaluation in a health care setting.  Our clinic has always encouraged patients to refer their sexual partners for treatment and we have effectively used partner notification strategies to notify individuals who may have been exposed to a sexually transmitted infection.  NOW THERE IS A NEW OPTION … CALLED EPT.
  • The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has concluded that EPT is a useful option to facilitate partner management, particularly for treatment of male partners of women with chlamydial infection or gonorrhea.

How much does EPT cost?

  • EPT is FREE
  • How do I get EPT?
  • All you have to do is call the EPT hotline at 716-858-4EPT (4378).  A nurse will go over the program with you and give you options to receive medication for your partner(s).
