March 10, 2004LEGISLATURE APPROVES PROPERTY
TAX EXTENSION FOR MILITARY
The Erie County Legislature voted to extend the deadline for the payment of real property taxes for service people deployed by the military, their spouses and domestic partners during its March 4 session.
"These men and women of Erie County, proudly serving their country, deserve the accommodation we can provide of having 90 more days to pay their real property taxes upon their return to civilian life," Legislature Chairman George A. Holt, Jr. (D-Buffalo) said.
"The members of the military from Erie County and elsewhere separated from their homes and families are not asking for a handout, but some understanding, and we are showing that we appreciate their sacrifices and want to assist them where possible," Legislature Majority Leader Lynn M. Marinelli (D-Tonawanda, Buffalo) said.
Upon returning from military service, residents can simply bring their tax bill and deployment orders to their local assessors office to qualify for a 90-day extension.
"We are showing that we realize these soldiers, airmen and airwomen, sailors and Marines are taking on a great and honorable responsibility of wearing the military uniforms of the United States," Legislator Raymond K. Dusza (D-Cheektowaga, Depew), a former U.S. Army paratrooper, said.
"Extending the deadline the members of the military affected can pay their real property taxes without penalty or interest is action we can proudly take," Legislator Albert DeBenedetti (D-Buffalo) said.
"These residents are putting their lives on the line to protect our freedom, the least we can do is protect them from penalties due to their service," Legislator Edward J. Kuwik (D-Blasdell) said. "Because we feel it is important to notify all service people affected, we are directing that this deadline extension be communicated to all local armed forces commanders."
"The tax collectors in all cities, towns and villages in Erie County will be informed of this legislation to help the people in uniform gain the full benefits of the law," Legislator Demone Smith (D-Buffalo) said.
"Our constituents serving in the armed forces should know that we, their elected officials, are concerned by their situations and will act to help them," Legislator Mark J.F. Schroeder (D-Buffalo, Cheektowaga) said.
"We hope and pray that our men and women serving in uniform everywhere return to their homes, families and friends safely and continue with their lives as soon as possible," Legislator Timothy M. Wroblewski (D-West Seneca, South Cheektowaga) said.
