LEGISLATORS REMIND RESIDENTS OF SALES TAX-FREE WEEK

Members of the Erie County Legislature's Democratic Majority would like to remind County residents of the upcoming sales tax-free week on certain clothing and footwear purchases. At its July 15 session, the Legislature voted to support the sales tax exemption holiday.

"State legislation allows Erie County the option of participating in the suspension of the sales tax on these items," Chairman Holt said. "County residents have taken great advantage of this action in the past and no doubt will do so again this year."

"This temporary exemption provides much needed tax breaks to the hard-working families in Buffalo and Western New York," Legislator Wroblewski said.

The next such sales tax-free week is scheduled to be held from August 31-September 6, and will suspend the collection of levy of all sales tax on purchase of clothing and footwear valued up to $110.

"The sales tax exemption on sales of clothing and footwear less than $110, makes Erie County competitive with other areas and boosts our local economy," said Legislator Kuwik.

"This is great timing for those of us with school age children to purchase our back to school items tax free," said Legislator DeBenedetti.

"Scheduled exemptions give businesses and customers the ability to plan ahead and make the most of these tax free weeks," said Legislator Schroeder.

In addition to shirts, slacks and shoes the exemption includes: aprons, arch supports, athletic sport uniforms, bathing caps and suits, belts and suspenders, hosiery, rain wear, scarves, handkerchiefs, ties, and shoe laces. In addition fabric, thread, yarn, buttons, snaps and zippers used to make or repair exempt clothing are tax exempt. Bibs, receiving blankets and diapers (including disposable) can also be purchased tax free.

"Residents utilize this sales tax exemption for many reasons," added Legislator Dusza. "The tax free weeks have been timed to help those families dressing their children for school and stocking up on coats and warmer clothing for the winter months."

"In the past, these sales tax holidays have been very successful, benefiting both consumers and businesses in Erie County," said Legislature Majority Leader Marinelli.

"Every resident of Erie County can benefit from this exemption, from business owners and workers to those in need of buying new clothes and footwear," Legislator Smith said.
