Legislator Kennedy pushes GED School on South Park Ave.

“The best way to get a kid who is a dropout off of a street corner and get his life back on track is to get him back in school,” said Freshman Erie County Legislator Tim Kennedy, who this week announced that he is working to establish a GED School on South Park Avenue, designed to help neighborhood dropouts complete their education.

The program will be modeled after the very successful program at the South Buffalo Education Center on Seneca Street, which Assemblyman Mark Schroeder established while he served as an Erie County Legislator.

Kennedy expressed his gratitude to Adult Education Division of the Buffalo Public Schools and Father William Bigelow, the Pastor of Holy Family Parish. The GED School is slated to occupy a portion of a parish building.

Himself a licensed Occupational Therapist with a masters degree, Kennedy indicated that he understands the important role that education can play in building a successful future. Kennedy recently left that position to serve full-time in the Erie County Legislature.

Persons interested in attending the GED School should contact Kennedy’s Legislative office at 824-6180.

In addition to the new GED School, in his very short tenure as a Legislator, Kennedy has undertaken a number of initiatives designed to assist South Park Avenue, including working with Congressman Higgins to secure $275,000 for the clean up of South Park Lake and successfully pushing the Legislature to restore a position necessary in order to receive a $1 million state grant to restore the Botanical Gardens.

Kennedy also worked with Congressman Higgins to secure $160,000 in federal funding for repaving South Park Avenue between Bailey Avenue and the lift bridge over the Buffalo River and an additional $160,000 for repaving Hopkins Street between Tifft Street and the South Park Ring Road.
