Legislator Kennedy Secures Outreach Sites To Promote Health Care Awareness for Senior Citizens

Despite county crisis, Kennedy continues to remain focused on key issues pertaining to his constituents. Erie County Legislator Timothy M. Kennedy secures four outreach sites in the Second Legislative District to promote health care awareness for senior citizens. Legislator Kennedy ranks educating and caring for senior citizens as one of his top priorities.

“I came from the private sector four months ago were I worked as an Occupational Therapist in a nursing home rehabbing many senior citizens,” Kennedy said, “I understand first hand the importance of educating our seniors on maintaining and improving their health and wellness. Erie County Department of Senior Services provides the necessary resources to obtain this result.”

Erie County Department of Senior Services offers a wealth of information and resources. They connect older adults directly with needed services, or if not able to directly help, will refer them to where they can get answers. In Erie County, one out of very five residents in aged 60 or older, and individual needs range greatly; one person may be seeking a way to stay busy after retirement, another may need help with personal care such as bathing or cooking. Senior Services provides help regarding finances, health issues, activities, and much more.

The Department can help with details involved with benefits and programs such as Food Stamps, SSI, New York’s EPIC Prescription plan, HEAP, Medicaid and Medicare. Health Insurance Information Counseling and Assistance program (HIICAP) helps individuals understand choices and options available to them through Medicare and HMO plans. The Going Places Transportation van service helps seniors get to doctor appointments or therapy as well as grocery shopping or to volunteer. Case Managers will meet in the privacy of your home to assess your needs and link you to the appropriate services.

There are more than fifty Stay Fit Nutrition Sites throughout Erie County where seniors and spouses can go for a nutritious and delicious lunch, company of friends, and an opportunity to learn about nutrition, cooking, or exercise if desired. For those unable to leave the house, the Department supports Meals on Wheels home-delivered meal services. The Caregiver Resource Center helps those who care for other family members, friends or grandchildren.

“The Department of Senior Services is a tremendous asset in educating senior citizens of the 2nd Legislative District,” Kennedy said, “They are essential to informing the seniors what services are offered to them and how they can obtain those services through either my office or the department of senior services office directly.”

Senior Services funds a variety of programs especially for older adults. They collaborate with service agencies throughout the area, and know about resources available throughout the community. The website provides information ranging from a list of senior centers, various housing options, how to make a home safer for an aging senior and information about the speakers bureau for address groups.
