Kennedy Welcomes Harbor Development Corporation to Economic Development Committee
Amidst a Bustling Harbor, New Developments Discussed
The Erie County Legislature's Economic Development Committee, under its Chairman, Legislator Tim Kennedy, recently received a presentation from Jordan Levy, Chairman of the Erie Canal Harbor Development Corporation, on details regarding the Outer Harbor Project and new developments.
The Erie Canal Harbor opened to the public during the Memorial Day weekend for the first time in project history. This "soft-opening," according to Levy, was nothing short of a success. The grand public opening for the Erie Canal Harbor is slated for July 4th, and will feature a patriotic theme, as well as fireworks, food vendors and live music.
During the presentation, Levy discussed recent developments and upcoming projects. At the most recent Harbor Development Corporation Board of Directors meeting, a $300,000 contract was approved which gave Buffalo Place the rights to handle operations and maintenance of the harbor site. The Harbor Development Corporation and Buffalo Place are currently working on putting together a dynamic summer programming schedule for the harbor, geared towards satisfying several areas of well-documented public interest, including: children's programs, cultural/arts programs, educational/historical programs, wellness initiatives and special events.
Levy also informed the audience that asbestos removal at both the Aud and Donovan buildings continues to be on track. According to Levy, "Remediation at the Aud, where our contractor has over 65 workers daily, should be completed by October 1st of this year." Additionally, demolition activities at the Aud are expected to begin this Fall, with the goal of having the Aud site completed by late-Spring of next year. Soon thereafter, the site will be "shovel-ready" for Bass Pro.
According to Legislator Tim Kennedy, "It is important to understand that none of these developments would be happening today without the leadership of Congressman Brian Higgins. Because of his leadership in the fight against the New York State Power Authority, the inner and outer harbors are taking shape. Congressman Higgins has been working towards waterfront revitalization for several years, and his exciting vision is becoming a reality. Our community owes him a debt of gratitude."
