Legislature Approves Kennedy's School 84 Renovation Funding

(Buffalo, NY – August 10, 2007) Last week, the Erie County Legislature approved $222,000 for the replacement of dilapidated windows and doors in Buffalo's School #84.

The school was left out of New York State School Reconstruction Project funding. Legislator Kennedy has since championed efforts to acquire funding to renovate the deteriorating condition of the school and work through the bureaucratic obstacles standing in the way of the school's inclusion in the next phase of the construction project.

"It may take an extended period of time to work through the bureaucratic process for School 84's inclusion in funding granted from NYS to take on major reconstruction," Kennedy said, "In the meantime, we have to ensure that the children attending the school have the best environment possible to learn in. Jagged edges protruding from doors and windows do not provide that atmosphere and this money will remedy that."

Buffalo School #84 is the city's designated school for children with disabilities. It was established in 1924 to provide medical and educational opportunities for children in Western New York who are unable to attend a regular school. The school is operated jointly by the Buffalo Board of Education and Erie County, through the Erie County Medical Center. Erie County is responsible for the operation and maintenance of the school building, the services of the medical and nursing staff and the physical and occupational therapists.

The Buffalo Board of Education provides the educational faculty, staff and all instructional supplies and equipment and transportation for the Buffalo students. Transportation and tuition for non-resident students are provided by their local school districts.

Construction on the school building will commence in the upcoming months to ensure the projects completion prior to the winter season. For more information on this or any other issue Legislator Kennedy is working on you may call his district office at 824-6180.
