Kennedy Connects Caring Volunteers with Local Parks to Benefit Community

Last Wednesday, Legislator Kennedy once again brought HSBC Bank volunteers and South Buffalo together in an effort to revamp local parks. Kennedy worked closely with the United Way's Day of Caring team to identify projects for over 130 HSBC volunteers that would have the most impact in our community.

"I am pleased we have opportunities like this," Kennedy said, "Connecting volunteers who want to give back to the community; with quality of life projects is a win-win situation for both sides."

Kennedy first looked to the Smith Street Park located in the Valley where two months ago HSBC volunteers started a two-walled mural project depicting the Buffalo River's waterway. This site was a common place to find spray paint graffiti and other forms of vandalism hindering the parks' use and appreciation.

Legislator Kennedy worked closely with the Mayor's impact team to prepare the area, clearing large debris and priming the wall. The HSBC volunteers went to work on the rest: painting the mural, weeding the area, painting graffiti covered rocks and various other tasks.

"I am very thankful for Mayor Byron Brown's efforts in preparing this site for the volunteers today," Kennedy said, "Mayor Brown has been very supportive in aiding South Buffalo with the completion of many local initiatives. We look forward to working with his administration in the future."

Other project sites included Mulroy Park (Holy Family) and Okell Park. Combined these parks saw over 90 HSBC volunteers, who together carried out various tasks such as: painting benches, tables and playground equipment. The teams also removed graffiti, picked up debris, redistributed mulch in the playgrounds and repaired broken swings.

HSBC Bank prides itself in giving back to the community through volunteers and contributions. Supplies for the three projects were donated by HSBC Bank, Erie County Parks department, Keep America Beautiful and Mayor Byron Brown's office.

"We are all thankful we were able to benefit from HSBC's efforts," Kennedy said, "The finished product seen today is the result of many entities working together for one common reason; to benefit the community. We are thankful to all parties involved, including the United Way for hosting their 15th annual Day of Caring event."

"We look forward to continuing this relationship with the United Way and HSBC Bank and look to foster other relationships like it," Kennedy said, "HSBC's has done a spectacular job with these projects, I know the park patrons who utilize these parks and the surrounding communities will be very appreciative."
