Legislator Kennedy Announces Hazardous Waste Drop-Off Day
Erie County will hold a Hazardous Waste Drop-off Day on Saturday, September 9th, at Honeywell Specialty Materials, 20 Peabody Street (off of Elk Street), Buffalo. This event, co-sponsored by the City of Buffalo, will be open to all Erie County residents between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m.
"Hazardous household materials could pose an unnecessary health and safety risk. Unwanted materials should be disposed in an environmentally sound manner," Kennedy said, "In order to provide residents with the opportunity to dispose of unused hazardous household materials, Erie County provides four Household Hazardous Waste Collection Days each spring and fall."
Hazardous household materials are common products you may use around the home almost everyday. A substance is considered hazardous if it ignites easily, reacts or explodes when mixed with other substances, and is corrosive or toxic. Check for labels that bear the words "poison", "toxic", "warning", "danger", "combustible", "flammable", "corrosive", or "caution."
Acceptable materials for free, proper disposal are oil-based paints and thinners, pesticides, herbicides, fungicides, wastes solvents, gasoline, motor oil, anti-freeze, lead and rechargeable batteries, propane tanks, and mercury. The collected materials will be recycled whenever possible. The non-recyclables will be disposed of in an environmentally safe manner by a licensed hazardous waste disposal company.
Participants must certify that their waste was household generated. Commercial or industrial waste will NOT be accepted. Oil-based paints are limited to ten gallons; solvents are limited to two gallons. Pesticides are limited to two gallons or twenty pounds. Latex paint and automobile tires will NOT be accepted.
