ERIE COUNTY LOOKS FORWARD TO A NEW YEAR
January 1st always brings about the opportunity for a fresh start and a chance to move in a new direction and accomplish more than the year before. This year, I look forward to beginning a new year working with County Executive-elect Chris Collins, his administration and all the members of the Erie County Legislature to help bring sound business principles, efficiencies and reform to Erie County government.
For the past month and a half, I have been honored to work with the County Executive-elect's Transition Team and serve as the Chairman of the Budget and Management Subcommittee. The members of our subcommittee brought a diverse and professional business background to the table and met to review and analyze the functions of the Erie County Division of Budget and Management. Our recommendations have been submitted to the Transition Team Executive Committee and the County Executive-elect. We took this responsibility very seriously since the Division of Budget and Management is primarily responsible for preparing, implementing and monitoring the County's operating, capital and grants budgets within the guidelines and policies established by the County Executive. They are also responsible for preparing the four-year financial plan for submission to the Erie County Fiscal Stability Authority. I appreciate the time and effort put forth by members and their willingness to participate in this very important process.
It is critical that the Legislature works effectively with the Administration and Control Board to make sure that necessary funding is in place to maintain public safety, road and bridge maintenance and repairs, cultural funding and tourism. Using solid business principles to restructure government and cut costs, we have the opportunity to reduce spending, lower taxes, and reform Erie County government.
As the Legislature re-convenes on January 8, 2008, we have a tremendous opportunity to work together and propose and implement legislation that benefits the taxpayers. I look forward to making real reforms – lower taxes, creating more jobs and bringing financial stability to Erie County. I will continue to listen to the residents of Erie County and push for dedicated funding for roads, bridges and culverts, and the revocation of the "Apprenticeship Law". I will keep you informed throughout the year as the Legislature monitors, reviews and adjusts the 2008 budget.
As always, I appreciate your feedback and comments about issues concerning Erie County government. Please feel free to write or visit me at 8203 Main Street - Suite 4, Williamsville, NY 14221, call my district office at 631-8695 or email me at ranzenhofer@erie.gov.
Best wishes for a healthy and happy New Year!
