SERVICES AVAILABLE TO ASSIST ERIE COUNTY SENIORS

There are a number of important and valuable services to senior citizens in our community, and I would like to inform you of some of these programs.

Property Tax Exemptions. It is extremely important to ensure that senior citizens, many who live on fixed incomes, can afford to own and maintain their homes. The Erie County Legislature has established the real property tax exemption for seniors who are 65 years of age or older and have owned their home for the past 12 consecutive months. You must apply for this exemption, as well as for “Enhanced" STAR (School Tax Relief) with your local assessor's office every year by May 1st. Seniors and other taxpayers who receive the “Basic" STAR tax relief benefits need not apply on an annual basis. Those seniors who have served our country in the United States Armed Forces may also qualify for a Veteran's Property Tax Exemption.

HEAP/WRAP/Lifeline. The Erie County Department of Senior Services offers the Home Energy Assistance Program (HEAP) to seniors who meet certain income eligibilities. Senior citizens may apply for this important program by mail, and there's still time left this winter for you to submit your application if you haven't done so already. Any HEAP eligible household in need of insulation, weather stripping or caulking may also be eligible for WRAP weatherization assistance. In addition, both Verizon and AT & T provide a reduction in the monthly phone bill for anyone who receives HEAP or other social services.

GOING PLACES VAN. The Going Places Transportation Program provides door-to-door van service to seniors in Clarence and Newstead who are unable to use conventional means of transportation and need to schedule doctor appointments, trips to grocery stores, and appointments for personal business. Call 895-0400 between the hours of 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. to schedule transportation.

RSVP. Retired & Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) is a wonderful program in Erie County that allows senior citizens to assist other seniors in their community. Anyone over the age of 55 is invited to volunteer a few hours every week and use their life experience and skills to answer the call of their neighbors in need. RSVP volunteers assist in many areas including hospitals, meals on wheels and youth mentoring. Van transportation is available for volunteers who need it to get to their site. For more information about RSVP, please call 858-7548.

MEDICARE Part D. As you know, beginning January 2, 2006, new Medicare drug plans are available to everyone with Medicare. Erie County provides a Health Insurance Information Counseling and Assistance Program to assist seniors in making the best decisions. Information is available by calling 858-7883.
