Legislator Ranzenhofer Demands Toll Increases be Rescinded

(Amherst, New York) - On Friday, April 25, 2008, the New York State Thruway Authority announced toll increases of 5% effective January 1, 2009 and an additional 5% on January 1, 2010. In addition, the NYSTA voted to eliminate some savings for customers using EZPass. Legislator Michael H. Ranzenhofer introduced a resolution to the Erie County Legislature opposing these increases and urging that the NYSTA immediately rescind them.

"In 2006, the NYSTA collected $554 million in tolls and spent $331 million operating the Thruway system. The State Comptroller recently released an audit demonstrating how the Authority can cut costs and avoid toll increases. These toll increases are unnecessary," stated Legislator Ranzenhofer. Ranzenhofer adds that the toll increases will negatively impact hardworking and overtaxed New Yorkers and increase the price of goods in stores due to increased transportation costs.

Ranzenhofer will seek approval of the resolution at the next session of the Erie County Legislature, scheduled for May 8, 2008.
