AMHERST LEGISLATORS ANNOUNCE LOCAL EVENT AS HUGE SUCCESS

Erie County Legislators Michael H. Ranzenhofer (R-Clarence), Barry A. Weinstein (R-Amherst) and Elise M. Cusack (R-Amherst) announced today that the Erie County Household Hazardous Waste Drop-Off Day, which was held on May 8, 2004 at the North Campus of Erie Community College, was a huge success. The event collected potentially hazardous wastes generated by households in Erie County to ensure that they are properly and safely disposed.

"Erie County residents are regularly presented opportunities to rid their houses of potentially harmful materials through the Erie County Household Hazardous Waste Program," said Legislator Ranzenhofer. "I applaud the residents who participated in our most recent event for their contribution to protecting our environment, and encourage residents to continue utilizing this important program."

"Each year Erie County sponsors Household Hazardous Waste events, which provide homeowners the ability to safely dispose of unwanted household waste for free," said Legislator Weinstein. "The event recently held in Amherst was a huge success. More than 1000 people participated in the event, and an enormous amount of materials were collected and disposed of properly."

"As homeowners, we use and accumulate many things that are potentially harmful to the environment," said Legislator Cusack. "The Household Hazardous Waste Program offers a convenient opportunity for residents to safely dispose of these items. I encourage those who have not yet utilized this resource to take advantage of our next event."

The Legislators noted that the last event of the year is scheduled for Saturday July 17, 2004. The event will take place at Praxair in the Town of Tonawanda. Those who have items they would like to get rid of are encouraged to utilize this event.

Below is a summary of items that were collected:
