Amherst Agricultural District Appoved
(Amherst, New York)—On Thursday, July 10, 2008, the Erie County Legislature passed a resolution approving and reaffirming the existing Amherst Agricultural District, Erie County District #17. The Amherst Agricultural District was initially established June 23, 1991. According to the New York State Agriculture and Markets Law, the County must review any agricultural district created under Article 25AA, every eight years after the date of its creation.
An environmental review of the district has been conducted and the Agriculture and Farmland Protection Board protection Board recommended approval. Legislator Ranzenhofer, a sponsor of the legislation, noted the importance of the measure stating, "Preserving our farmland and protecting our farmers is critical to the fabric of our communities. This action insures we can secure this important agricultural district for eight more years." Legislator Rath, also a sponsor, added, "It's important for Erie County and the State of New York work together in providing support necessary for farmers in Amherst. For generations Amherst farm families have contributed to our economic prosperity, quality of life, and volunteer community. I applaud the legislature for securing the future of this important agricultural district."
