LEGISLATOR KONST ANNOUNCES PROGRAM TO BENEFIT LOCAL FARMERS

At a legislative meeting on March 21, 2008, Erie County Legislator Kathy Konst voted in favor of the implementation of an Integrated Pest Management Program in Erie County. The measure, which would enable Erie County to access nearly $100,000 in grant funding from the United States Environmental Protection Agency, was approved unanimously.

"Consumers have been voicing increasing concern over the health impact of eating farm products that may be contaminated with pesticide residue," Konst began. "To help achieve the goals of the EPA's Strategic Agricultural Initiative to reduce pesticide use, it was important for Erie County to access this federal funding."

The Division of Enforcement and Compliance Assistance, Pesticides and Toxic Substance Branch of Region 2 of the EPA solicited proposals that will reduce the exposure to toxic pesticides through the adoption of farm pest management practices that transition away from the use of high risk pesticides.

"This grant will provide education and outreach services to local dairy, vegetable and fruit farmers to reduce pesticide use in food production. The Cornell Cooperative Extension of Erie County will be a partner in this information effort," Konst continued.

The Strategic Agricultural Initiative aims to decrease the residues of pesticides on food eaten by children and to reduce the mortality of wildlife caused by pesticides. The Erie County Legislature's action will allow the County Executive to enter into the necessary agreement to draw down the EPA funds and play a role in the Strategic Agricultural Initiative.

"I was pleased to support this important program for the benefit of the farmers and families in my legislative district and beyond," Konst concluded.
