LEGISLATOR WHYTE SUPPORTS STATE GRANT APPROVAL TO FUND WEST SIDE DELINQUENCY PREVENTION PROGRAM

Erie County Legislature Majority Leader Maria R. Whyte (D-Buffalo) announces that the Erie County Legislature is accepting a New York State grant to extend a contract with the Boys and Girls Clubs of Buffalo to fund the West Side Delinquency Prevention program.

Majority Leader Whyte noted that the special state grant award, worth $88,296, from the state Division of Criminal Justice Services, will fund the extension of a current grant and increase an existing contract with the Boys and Girls Clubs of Buffalo. The program is fully funded through the grant and in-kind services from the Boys and Girls Clubs of Buffalo, with no local share and no fiscal impact on the 2006 County Budget.

“It is far less expensive, in both actual and social costs, to invest in youth development than it is to fund incarceration and juvenile detention. Preventing youths from turning to delinquency, and possibly a life of crime, is everyone’s responsibility, including those of us in government,” Majority Leader Whyte said. “That is why funding programs like the Boys and Girls Clubs through public sector grants is so important.”
