LEGISLATOR WHYTE, LEGISLATURE APPROVE EXPLORATION OF FREE WEEK OF NFTA BUS, RAIL FARES
The Erie County Legislature overwhelmingly approved a resolution co-sponsored by County Legislature Majority Leader Maria R. Whyte (D-Buffalo) to explore the idea of the Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority offering one week of free bus and rail ridership to resident of Erie and Niagara Counties at its June 7 session.
The free week of public transportation ridership is aimed to address several concerns and situations, including transportation costs, especially to lower-wage workers; access to employment and environmental conditions. According to the NFTA, the cost of one weekof free bus and rail fares would be about $265,000.
"With gasoline prices reaching ominous record-highs and no end to the price hikes in sight, as well as harmful pollutants in gasoline linked to global warming, seeking a way to reduce the demand and consumption of gasoline is vital," Legislator Whyte said. "This will give people who have not been able to use NFTA bus and rail service the opportunity it see how clean, inexpensive and efficient such public transportation can be. The free rail and bus service week would also provide savings from reduced parking fees, vehicle and road wear and tear."
"I am also pleased that this will give people across Buffalo and Western New York, including residents of the 6th District, the chance to be able to more safely and efficiently get to their jobs or apply for employment," Legislator Whyte added. "We are asking the Erie and Niagara County delegation of the New York State Legislature and Congress to work to secure the necessary funds to allow the NFTA to be able to replace the fare box colections it would otherwise lose. This is a great opportunity to show people what a great option public transportation is."
