LEGISLATOR WROBLEWSKI, COUNTY LEGISLATURE ACTION HELPS DEFEAT PLAN TO INCREASE STATE AUTO INSURANCE FEES
Erie County Legislator Timothy M. Wroblewski (D-West Seneca, South Cheektowaga) is pleased that the New York State Legislature took heed of the resolution he authored denouncing a proposal that would raise the New York State Motor Vehicle Insurance fee on every vehicle that is registered in New York by $15, from $5 to $20 this year, by removing the plan from the 2008-09 New York State budget plan.
"This would basically have been a new tax or hidden tax, regardless of what some people tried to call it to sneak it into the budget," Legislator Wroblewski, Chairman of the Legislature's Public Safety Committee and co-sponsor of the County Legislature's March resolution, said. "Some people claimed that the 2008-2009 state budget proposal is free of new taxes. This surcharge on auto insurance policies was one of many fee increases proposed, so I am glad that I was able to help lead the County Legislature in opposing this. We were able to get State Assemblymen and Senators to listen to our demands and to eliminate this virtual tax."
"Defeating the proposed auto insurance fee allowed us to successfully fight to support the residents, taxpayers and business owners of the 9th District and Erie County," Legislator Wroblewski added. "We need to make the elected officials in Albany not only take notice of the state actions that affect us on taxes and services here in Erie County, but to make sure that they act in our best interests."
"We must continue to lobby our state officials to make certain Erie County and other Western New York residents stop paying higher New York State Thruway tolls, higher gasoline prices and higher home heating costs," Legislator Wroblewski concluded.
