LEGISLATOR MICHELE IANNELLO AND CLEAN AIR COALITION ANNOUNCE GRANT
Legislator Michele M. Iannello, D-Kenmore, and Jackie James, Executive Director of the Clean Air Coalition of Western New York (CACWNY) will host a press conference Saturday, January 19th at 9:30 a.m. to announce a grant from the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation. The announcement will take place at the River Road Fire District No. 3, 57 Kaufman Ave. in the Town of Tonawanda. The public is invited to attend.
Executive Director James stated, "We have been working closely with the DEC and University of Buffalo. Representatives will be on hand at the press conference to answer any questions. She went on to say that the grant is for $24,000 and will allow research to determine if there is a link between air pollution and the community‘s health in the Town of Tonawanda. Currently, the DEC policy does not take into consideration any health risks associated with combined emissions from multiple facilities and transportation emissions.
Executive Director James stated, "The grant will allow us to investigate any potential link between these emissions and a local health factor. We are asking for citizen volunteers to help with this study. Details of the public's role will be announced at the press conference.
Legislator Iannello commended Jackie for her leadership along with members of the CACWNY for making this grant a reality through citizen participation and volunteer efforts.
"Jackie is a member of my 10th District Focus Group, consisting of citizens, representatives of business, non-profits, and civic groups. Our shared vision is to improve the quality of life in the 10th district through citizen participation activities. Jackie and the members of the Clean Air Coalition have set the bar and proven that being involved can make a difference."
Legislator Iannello began the 10th District Improvement Initiative group just 10 months ago. A shared vision created by all the participants has resulted in short and long term goals. The immediate goal is to assist Jackie James in recruiting volunteers to participate in the grant project.
Phil Haberstro from the Wellness Institute serves as facilitator for the group that meets once a month in the Ken-Ton Chamber of Commerce. He stated that the Focus Group is a unique undertaking by Legislator Iannello. In just ten short months we have defined our mission, our vision of desired outcomes, and a process to make it happen. Anyone interested in joining the Focus Group can contact Legislator Iannello at 858-6757 or if interested in participating in the study, contact Legislator Iannello's website: www.micheleiannello.com.
