LEGISLATOR IANNELLO PARTICIPATES IN ENVIRONMENTAL FORUM

Erie County Legislator Michele Iannello (D-Kenmore) will be a guest speaker at the Grand Island Quality Quest Committee on Thursday, May 22 evening. The meeting will be at 7:00 p.m. at the NIKE Base, 3278 Whitehaven Road. The topic of the meeting will be reduced use or elimination of lawn pesticides, legal notification to neighboring properties and enforcement issues. Additional presenters are Thomas Hersey, Coordinator – Pollution Prevention Programs for Erie County Department of Environment and Planning and Jennifer Grant, a specialist on pest management from Cornell University.

Legislator Iannello stated, "At this time of year my office receives many calls regarding the Pesticide Notification Law and use of pesticides. This is a timely topic for residents and businesses alike. DEC regulations come into play regarding use of pesticides and that will also be explained during the presentations. I hope for a large audience for this timely topic."

The Quality Quest Committee is a Grand Island based organization consisting of a broad membership of citizens. The mission is to address quality of life issues regarding the environment. They have been involved in volunteer projects such as cleaning up the parks, nature walks and tree planting. They sponsor educational programs on local birds, plants, and this month the pesticide issue. Elected officials often participate as guest speakers. The committee works closely with the Grand Island Town Board in preparing its projects. Jim Tomkins serves as president. There are approximately 250 members and anyone interested is welcome to attend the Thursday meeting.
