LEGISLATOR IANNELLO HONORS OUR SENIOR CITIZENS
For several years May has been designated as "Older Americans Month" across our nation. Since seniors are the fastest growing sector of our population, this gives us an appropriate opportunity to recognize and celebrate the immense contributions seniors have made and continue to make to our community and our country. Personally, I have great respect for seniors as I grew up with my grandmother's love and attention and am fortunate to have my parents with me today in my adult life.
Currently, there are 47 million Americans, 60 years or older who serve as role models for younger generations. Seniors portray a legacy of patriotism and courage as many fought for our country to preserve our quality of life. They did this while away from home and family, thousands of miles from our American borders. These courageous men and women have set an example for the young men and women of our armed forces who are experiencing the same circumstances today.
During this past month I had the pleasure of visiting several senior centers in the 10th Legislative District. I must say, our seniors are fun loving, great cooks, great dancers and all sport a wonderful sense of humor. The Senior Centers in the City of Tonawanda, the Town of Tonawanda and The Golden Age Center on Grand Island are all a bee hive of activity and are a significant element in each of their respective communities. If you are a senior citizen and not a member of one of these organizations, you are missing out on a wonderful opportunity for recreation, travel opportunity, a host of activities and most of all, a bond and camaraderie second to none.
Recently, I attended the "Over 80" event in the City of Tonawanda. I presented Director Doreen Harris the following proclamation on behalf of all our seniors. Each word comes from my heart with sincere appreciation for everything our seniors have done to make my life, and the lives of all of us, what it is today.
WHEREAS, seniors are the fastest growing sector of our population and OLDER AMERICANS' MONTH gives all of us an opportunity to recognize and celebrate the immense contributions seniors have made and continue to make to the life and vibrancy of our community and our nation; and
WHEREAS, our senior citizens are a valuable resource and continue to serve as mentors, leaders, volunteers and active members of our community; and
WHEREAS, the knowledge and experience that seniors pass on to the younger generations play an important role that helps us define both our past and our future; and
WHEREAS, our OLDER AMERICANS serve as role models due to their legacy of patriotism, courage, endurance; and
WHEREAS, our seniors deserve our greatest respect as they show us how to persevere and succeed in times of hardship and stress; and
WHEREAS, on behalf of the Erie County Legislature I personally commend our OLDER AMERICANS for the many and varied contributions they have made to our community, our nation and the world; and
WHEREAS, I encourage all Americans to honor their elders and furthermore commend all those caregivers and volunteers who work on behalf or our nation's OLDER AMERICANS.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that I, Erie County Legislator Michele Iannello, do hereby proclaim the month of May to be
OLDER AMERICANS MONTH
in the County of Erie as we offer our collective thanks and appreciation for the quality of life we as younger Americans experience due to our nation's OLDER AMERICANS.
