Michele M. Iannello - District 10 June 29, 2009 LEGISLATOR IANNELLO ASSISTS IN GREEN BUS INITIATIVE Legislator Michele M. Iannello (D-Kenmore) recently partnered with Robert Kirisits, owner of Rainbow Transportation in securing funds to retrofit their fleet of school buses to make them more environmentally friendly. Together they have received a grant from the New York State Research and Development Administration (NYSERDA) the amount awarded in the grant is $28, 929. This will allow the local transportation company to upgrade Diesel Emission Equipment for 19 school buses operating in the City of Tonawanda. The two pieces of equipment involved are Crank Case Ventilation filters and Diesel Oxidation Catalysts. Bob Kirisists reported "The installation of this equipment will take place over the summer months while the buses are not in operation. They will be ready for the fall '09 school year, making a cleaner and healthier environment for our children." By installing this new equipment, the emissions of the particulate matter will be reduced by 30% and carbon monoxide and hydrocarbons will be removed. " The more important factor, is that this equipment takes out 90% of the emissions that enter the cab and bus, making it a much healthier atmosphere for the school children of Tonawanda," stated the Legislator. "The students are in these buses five days a week, twice a day, and that is a lot of hours over a school year," added Iannello.
