Girls Varsity Hockey League Gains Legislative Support
Erie County Legislator Michele Iannello (D-Kenmore) took quick action following a July 7th Buffalo News article. The article told information about a girl's ice hockey development committee that is exploring the creation of a regional girl's varsity hockey league. The lack of equality for girl's ice hockey inspired Iannello to author the resolution supporting the creation of a league. In an already full agenda before their summer recess, the Legislature passed the resolution unanimously.
Over 900 girls locally play ice hockey on community recreation teams but there is no school league for these girls to join. Often times these girls are over looked by colleges while their male peers receive substantial scholarships for their puck handling abilities. Should the league get the adequate amount of teams, the legislature has suggested that they apply for funding through Erie County Youth Services in conjunction with other private/public sources. In order to have a premiere season for the 2010-2011 school year, the league will need to field five (5) committed teams by December. Legislator Iannello, an avid hockey fan herself, is also the President of Hasek's Heroes, a youth hockey organization which strives to give children from low- to moderate-income families the opportunity to learn basic skating and hockey skills in a development program with an emphasis on education.
