DIRECTOR, PRODUCER, SET DESIGNER SCOTT BEHREND APPOINTED CULTURAL RESOURCES LIAISON BY LEGISLATURE COMMITTEE

Scott Behrend

Veteran theater director and stage designer Scott Behrend of Amherst was appointed liaison to the Erie County Cultural Resources Advisory Board by The Erie County Legislature Community Enrichment Committee July 20.

Behrend, the artistic director and executive director of Road Less Traveled Productions, recently announced that his production company has moved to the Market Arcade Film and Arts Centre on Main Street in Buffalo for the 2006-2007 theater season. He and the company's board of directors are pleased that the new home for the theater group will be open for Curtain Up! 2006. RLTP is a three-year old theater company dedicated to producing and performing scripts written by Buffalo-based authors. RLTP first performed at New Phoenix Theater on Buffalo's Lower West Side, sharing space with the New Phoenix Company.

A Syracuse University graduate, where he received his bachelor of fine arts degree in design technical theater, Behrend directed "Entertaining Mr. Sloane," starring Alec Baldwin, earlier this year, and the Road Less Traveled Theatre's next production will be "The Dodo Bird," written by playwright Emanuel Fried, which will be performed from September 8 through October 8 at the Market Arcade.

Behrend also served as the artistic director, producer, story writer and as an actor in the feature-length film "Lemkin's Last Sale," also produced by Road Less Traveled Productions. He has worked in set design at Studio Arena Theatre, the Irish Classical Theatre Company, Buffalo Ensemble Theatre and the Kavinoky Theatre Company.

Later in the season, RLTP will present the premiere of a play by one of Buffalo's upcoming dramatists, Jon Elston. Elston, RLTP's playwright-in-residence, will unveil "Buffalo Movie" from April 13 through May 8, 2007, a cynical comedy about creating a movie in Buffalo.

Other productions for RLTP's 2006-07 season are in the planning. The 2006-07 calendar is expected to include a premiere script from RLTP's New Play Workshop, a developmental program from regional dramatists.

The County Legislature Community Enrichment Committee, chaired by Legislator Michele M. Iannello (D-Kenmore) approved Behrend's appointment, which will go to the full Legislature for approval at its July 27 session. His appointment was sponsored by County Legislator Thomas A. Loughran (D-Amherst, Cheektowaga, Tonawanda).
