LEGISLATOR IANNELLO APPLAUDS COUNTY'S GREEN COMPUTING INITIATIVE
URGES COUNTY EXECUTIVE TO IMPLEMENT ALL OF HER RECOMMENDATIONS TO MAXIMIZE SAVINGS FOR TAXPAYERS
Erie County Legislator Michele M. Iannello (D-Kenmore) is applauding the County's newly announced efforts to implement her recommendations for energy and cost efficient computer use.
The Erie County Department of Information Technology disseminated an email July 24 asking computer users to turn off their PCs on the weekends and to remove images from their screen savers.
"I am proud of the County's willingness to implement some of the steps I introduced in my resolution earlier this month. However, the County should implement all of the steps I presented in order to maximize savings for taxpayers and to minimize computer generation of carbon emissions."
Iannello's recommendations to the County, which have been researched and advocated by the U.S. Department of Energy, could save taxpayers upward of $400,000.
In addition to the steps outlined by the County July 24, Iannello has also urged County computer users to turn of their PCs when they leave for the day and not just on the weekends. According to the Department of Energy, if a computer is left idle for more than two hours, it is more energy efficient to power down the PC.
"If we are serious about saving taxpayers significant amounts of money and reducing the County's carbon footprint, the County must implement each and every recommendation in my resolution and do so immediately – not a day late and $400,000 short."
Her resolution also suggests computer users to turn off their monitors if they will be away from their desks for more than twenty minutes, say for lunch or a meeting. (Screen savers are not energy savers and can actually use more energy than not using one at all.)
Iannello also wants the County to enable energy saving hibernate or sleep modes on all PCs to save additional energy during the work day.
