LEGISLATOR IANNELLO HONORS GRAND ISLAND ALL STARS
Erie County Legislator Michele M. Iannello (D-Kenmore) is taking time out of her schedule to give the Grand Island Little League Baseball All Stars a "send off" party as they embark for Brewster, New York in Putnam County to participate in State competition. The send off celebration will take place at 7:00 p.m. Thursday, July 30th at the Island Dugout on Grand Island. The baseball team just experienced victory at the state sectional tournament in Penn Yan, New York on July 25th and 26th. This weekend the team will compete in what some have termed the World Series of Little League in the highest competition to date. Super star coaches Mike Chorey and Paul Jasek will accompany the team.
"This is an exciting event not just for the players and coaches, but all of the Grand Island community should be congratulating them and sending them off to another victory. When I heard about their success at the state sectionals, I was ecstatic and decided these young sportsmen and their coaches deserve public recognition and the good wishes of their community, "stated the Legislator.
"When you realize how small Grand Island is with only six teams to choose from to put together an All Star Team, our victories become even more significant. The team, known as the Vikings, has defeated All Star teams from the Town of Tonawanda, Batavia and Rochester," stated Joe Ciffa. " Those cities have a much larger pool to draw from."
The age of the players is 13 and 14 years old. The team practices take place at the Island Dugout and batting cages owned by Joe Ciffa whose son is on the team. He has offered the facility to the team free of charge.
The Vikings first game this weekend in Brewster is at noon Saturday, August 1st, followed by a double header on Sunday. If they win on Sunday, the game to determine who goes to the National competition is Monday at 6:00 p.m. The team will return on Tuesday. If they win the Monday's competition, they compete in the nationals in Rhode Island on August 8th. Beyond that, the winners will play various countries, possibly even China.
Participating teams will be recognized in Brewster with a welcoming ceremony and presentations on Saturday morning and a picnic on Saturday night.
Legislator Iannello is extending an open invitation to all Grand Island officials and residents to participate in the send off celebration on Thursday.
