Local Law No. 9 Land lease for ECC Student Housing
Erie County Legislator Michele Iannello ( D-Kenmore, Tonawanda), Chairwoman of the Community Enrichment Committee, along with ten fellow legislators, proudly announced that she has clocked in Local Law No. 9.
The measure provides for the lease of Erie County property to Erie Community College for the purpose of constructing student housing on the South Campus. The area involves 10 acres that will be developed by the Erie County Community College Foundation, a 501(c) (3) affiliate of the College. The lease provides for a term of 35 years. The previous law provided for a 5-year lease.
Legislator Iannello made the following points regarding the proposed housing: "Resident housing is all about keeping our young people in the area. It will allow students to experience campus life right here in Erie County with the hope that they will remain in Western New York. This housing is one small step in addressing the 'brain drain' referred to by public officials and educators."
Legislator Iannello also stated that several community colleges in and around New York State have already developed student housing. It has resulted in an increase in student numbers on those campuses.
"Our goal is to reverse the trend of students attending out-of-town colleges and not returning after completing their education," Legislator Iannello said. She commended her fellow legislators for supporting the law and the College’s aggressive and positive action. The law will officially be acted on during the September 28 session of the County Legislature.
