LEGISLATURE UNANIMOUSLY APPROVES IANNELLO'S RESOLUTION FOR PROBATION DEPARTMENT
Erie County Legislator Michele M. Iannello (D- Kenmore) introduced a resolution requesting the County Executive to pursue an Efficiency Grant from the Erie County Fiscal Stability Authority. The grant would be for purchase of a new software program called Caseload Explorer for the County's Probation Department. The resolution was passed unanimously at the September 11, 2008 session.
Legislator Iannello stated, "This software program will enable the County Probation office to streamline it's record keeping and work more efficiently in tracking over 6,000 probation cases. Currently, many are lost due to outdated software and equipment. With all the talk of meeting specific needs of the 21st Century, public safety is a priority that never changes with time. I encourage County Executive Collins to act swiftly on this request."
The Probation Department's mission is to help ensure a safer community by collaborating with various law enforcement and social service agencies. In that effort, the Department must be able to track any active case at any given time. However, current software is out-dated and unreliable. This puts our community at risk since it is possible to lose track of cases including those convicted of serious and violent crimes. The new software called Caseload Explorer is a modern and reliable system used across NY State and the Country.
In her effort to obtain an Efficiency Grant, Iannello sought to address a public safety issue while finding a funding source that does not come out of the County budget. An Effciency Grant from the Fiscal Stability Authority creates zero financial impact to taxpayers. Cost estimates at this time are approximately $100,000.
The resolution requests that County Executive Chris Collins work with the Probation Department to research and define the specific needs of the Department. The resolution also requests that the application for the Efficiency Grant be made in a timely manner as the costs for the software will increase by 5% in January of 2009.
