Iannello Calls on County Executive to Include Tax Cut in Budget
Says she can't support any budget without property tax relief
Erie County Legislator Michele M. Iannello (D-Kenmore) is calling on the County Executive to include a property tax cut in the County's 2010 budget. The County Executive recently announced his plans for next year's budget but it did not include any property tax relief. The County Executive also announced that the County now has a $20 million surplus. The administration had forecasted a deficit for this year, therefore raising property taxes $3.7 million in the 2009 budget.
"Now more than ever, Erie County residents need property tax relief. Last year the County Executive raised taxes, but now we have a budget surplus and it is time to return the money to the taxpayers," Legislator Iannello said. "I strongly encourage the County Executive to reduce spending and to match the tax amount by working with the state to reduce Medicaid fraud, holding the line on salaries for department heads, trimming at least $100,000 off of his $600,000 administrative budget and to work with the Green Actions Committee to realize $500,000 in energy cost savings."
Legislator Iannello said that as the Legislator of the 10th District, she will continue working to cut costs by downsizing the Legislature, by using the Taxpayer Protection Law to monitor County contracts and she would continue pushing for a debt diet to reduce the cost of debt service paid for by the taxpayers.
"I cannot support any budget that does not include a tax cut that would roll back the County Executive's tax hike of 2009," Legislator Iannello concluded.
