LEGISLATOR IANNELLO LEADS LEGISLATURE IN OVERRIDE VOTE TO ALLOW ECC LAND LEASE LAW CHANGE FOR STUDENT HOUSING
Erie County Legislator Michele M. Iannello (D-Kenmore) is pleased to announce that the Erie County Legislature recently overwhelmingly overrode the veto issued by the County Executive on Local Law No. 9, which will allow for the leasing of county property to Erie Community College to build student housing at the South Campus in Orchard Park.
The 10 acres of property will be developed by the Erie County Community College Foundation, a 501(c) (3) affiliate of the College. The lease will be a term of 35 years, compared to five years allowed by the previous law. No tax dollars are involved.
"This resident student housing will allow our young people to stay in the area, attend school and experience campus life, all in Erie County," Legislator Iannello, chairperson of the Community Services Committee, said . "The on-campus housing will help us keep these educated adults in Western New York. This housing is one small step in addressing the 'brain drain' warned about by public officials and educators."
Legislator Iannello notes that several community colleges in and around New York State have already developed student housing, which has resulted in an increase in students on those campuses.
"The Legislature worked hard on this local law, so that we can develop this vital on-campus housing. We believe that reversing the unfortunate veto of this local law is vital to the future of Erie Community College and its students," Legislator Iannello concluded. "I applaud the vast majority of County Legislators who joined me in voting for the important action in the future of Erie Community College and Erie County itself and its aggressive plan and action. This is a positive way to fight the trend of students attending out-of-town colleges and not returning after completing their education."
