LEGISLATOR IANNELLO PASSES "COMPLETE STREETS"
Legislator Michele M. Iannello, (D-Kenmore) along with Majority Leader Maria Whyte and Legislator Bob Reynolds, successfully authored a resolution calling for "Complete Streets" within Erie County. The resolution was passed at the November 20th session of the Erie County Legislature.
The concept of "Complete Streets" calls for roads to be designed or redesigned to include pedestrian and bicycle facilities when fiscally feasible and where space allows. Erie County has joined with 200 cities across the nation to ensure an action plan to increase walking and biking as a mode of transportation. Motor vehicle travel is on the rise with limited space in urban areas to increase highway and roadway travel. Hiking and biking can serve not only to increase recreational opportunities, but encourage short daily commutes by bicycle as opposed to automobile. Bicycling short distances to school or work can save up to $1800 per year in fuel and transportation costs. All designs would have to be in accordance with the United Stated Department of Transportation, the New York State Department of Transportation and other guidelines adhered to by Erie County.
Legislator Iannello stated, "This resolution is intended to improve human health, decrease carbon emissions, increase walking and bicycling as a means of transportation, health and well being. This resolution is in concert with the philosophy for the safety, health and environmental integrity of all residents of Erie County. With the carbon emissions at a critical point in our nation, obesity arising in our youth as well as adults, Erie County can play a lead role in reversing the pattern by implementing "Complete Street" policies. This can significantly improve our quality of life as we join with other communities across the country in a pro-active manner."
