FREE COUNTY RABIES CLINICS TO BEGIN JANUARY 31

Erie County Legislature Chairperson Lynn M. Marinelli (D-Buffalo, Tonawanda) announces that the first in the series of free rabies clinics for 2007 will be held from 2-4 p.m. Wednesday, January 31, at the North Buffalo Community Center at 203 Sanders Road off Colvin Boulevard, just south of Kenmore Avenue, in Buffalo. The Erie County Department of Health will be joined by the Niagara Frontier Veterinarian Society and the Erie County SPCA to provide free rabies vaccines.

"We must protect families and their pets from rabies. I applaud the efforts of the Health Department, the SPCA, and the Niagara Frontier Veterinarian Society for working together to keep our community safe from rabies," Legislator Marinelli said. "These free clinics are a great way to fight rabies disease. I urge everyone to bring their dog or cat in for a vaccination."

"Animal rabies continues to be a serious public health problem, and with spring just a few months away, the increased chance of contact between wildlife, humans and their pets could pose a problem," Erie County Health Commissioner Anthony J. Billitier said. "Should this occur, the Erie County Department of Health is prepared to assist anyone with possible exposure to rabies."

Legislator Marinelli noted that any exposure to a wild animal, including bites from dogs or cats, should be reported immediately to the Erie County Department of Health by calling 858-7677 during the day or 898-4225 during evenings and weekends.

The remainder of the free rabies scheduled will be released in the near future.
