September 30, 2004MARINELLI SECURES $3,000
FOR LITERACY VOLUNTEERS
Erie County Legislature Majority Leader Lynn Marinelli (D-Tonawanda, Buffalo) recently sponsored an Erie County grant in the amount of $3,000 for the Erie County Chapter of Literacy Volunteers of America.
The Literacy Volunteers of American was founded in Syracuse in 1962, with a Buffalo chapter opening in 1965. In 2002-2003 alone, the Buffalo chapter provided 70,768 hours of one-to-one literacy skills training, and services for residents of Buffalo & Erie County.
"One in five Erie County residents are functionally illiterate, and those residents are locked out of all the opportunities that being able to read provides," Legislator Marinelli pointed out. "I am proud to sponsor this funding for Literacy Volunteers, who are the foot soldiers in the battle against illiteracy."
