COUNTY LEGISLATOR REYNOLDS CRITICIZES ADMINISTRATION FOR GRANTING INCREASE IN DEPUTY COUNTY EXECUTIVE PAY
Erie County Legislator Robert B. Reynolds Jr. (D-Hamburg, Evans) is opposing the recent pay increase granted by the administration to the Deputy County Executive.
At today's Erie County Legislature session, a communication notifying the legislature that the Deputy County Executive received an increase in his annual salary up to $114,109, an almost 6.5 percent increase over the previous salary of $107,397, was received and filed. The communication stated that the pay increase started in the Deputy County Executives July 24, 2009, pay check.
"It appears that the MC Executive Staff 42 pay scale, at which the Deputy County Executive serves, originally provided for the $107,397 salary, with a built in option of a step increase," Legislator Reynolds said. "It was clearly pointed out during committee hearings that previous Deputy County Executives did not receive longevity salary increases during their service."
"In this time of taxpayers tightening their household budgets and not receiving large, if any, pay increases, an annual increase of $6,712, or almost $130 a week, is indefensible for a public servant already earning more than $100,000," Legislator Reynolds concluded. "I had hoped the administration would have frozen top level salaries during these tough economic times. During committee hearings, I asked the administration to take the corrective action and reinstate the Deputy County Executive's salary to its previous level, and hold the line on increases for top administrators."
