TEMPORARY REOPENING OF FREEMAN ROAD BRIDGE EFFECTIVE DECEMBER 15, 2008
Legislator John Mills, District 13, announced Monday, that the Freeman Road Bridge will be temporarily reopened at close of business on December 15th. The bridge has been closed for replacement since June 27, 2008. Freeman Road has been closed from Meadow Road to E.Quaker Street (20A) allowing only local traffic.
No records have been found of the original bridge/dam construction data, however, it is believed that the original structure was built in the late 1800s. In 1929 extensive reconstruction work was completed.
The final cost for the 2008 bridge/dam replacement will be $1.65 million with Federal funding paying 80%, 15% from New York State and the County paying the remaining 5%. The new bridge was assembled from pre-cast concrete arches, which were built off-site, transported and lowered by crane onto the foundation.
The bridge will again be closed for the completion of the project, weather dependent, in April, with reopening tentatively scheduled for June 2009.
