Legislator Mills seeks to save taxpayer money by utilizing GPS technology

A RESOLUTION TO BE SUBMITTED
BY LEGISLATORS MILLS, RANZENHOFER & RATH

RE: USE OF GPS DEVICES IN ERIE COUNTY VEHICLES

WHEREAS, Global Positioning System ("GPS") tracking devices installed on government issued vehicles are helping communities around the country reduce waste and abuse and increase safety; and

WHEREAS, it has been shown in the Town of Islip on Long Island, which installed GPS tracking devices on its 614 vehicles, that monitoring municipal vehicles has deterred abuse, saving the taxpayers money in gasoline and lost productivity; and

WHEREAS, after GPS devices were installed, the Town of Islip saved nearly 14,000 gallons of gasoline over a three month period compared with the previous year; and

WHEREAS, the installation of GPS devices on municipal vehicles can alert mechanics that a car's engine is operating inefficiently and improve the maintenance and operation of the vehicle; and

WHEREAS, the primary purpose of installing GPS devices is to improve the maintenance and operation of the vehicles, design more efficient routes and improve services to the taxpayers; and

WHEREAS, with the current average cost of gasoline at more than $3.25 per gallon, efficiencies should be made to reduce fuel consumption and save money; and

WHEREAS, the Town of Islip purchased their GPS system from a state bid and saved a considerable amount of money; and

WHEREAS, Erie County is looking to implement necessary reductions and efficiencies to bring fiscal stability to Erie County government; and

NOW; THEREFORE, BE IT

RESOLVED, Erie County perform a cost benefit analysis to determine the feasibility of implementing a GPS system and the cost savings to be derived from such a system; and be it further

RESOLVED, that a certified copy of this resolution be sent to County Executive Chris Collins, Division of Information & Support Services Director Joseph Gervase and the Erie County Fiscal Stability Authority.

Fiscal Impact: Positive for the residents of Erie County
