Legislature Approves Erie Community College Budget
Resolution approves full amount granted in the 2010 Erie County Budget for the College
Buffalo, NY – At a regular session of the Erie County Legislature on June 24th, the members unanimously passed the budget for Erie Community College (ECC).
The County, as the primary sponsor of the College, is required to approve a budget annually for the College. The Legislature in adopting the budget for the upcoming year gave ECC a total of $17,429,317 which includes the restoration of $208,539 which Collins sought to remove from ECC's budget allocation. The $208,539 figure is the same amount that the Administration removed from the payment to ECC for the current year college budget that was made to the college in March of this year.
"Our Community College is a vital pathway out of poverty for many residents of Erie County," explained Legislator Maria Whyte (D, 6th District), "funding it to the full amount we budgeted is critical. When the County Executive sent the college a check this year that was $208,539 less than the amount we allocated in last year's budget he seemed to be saying to the Legislature 'if you don't like what I am doing then sue me', and that is completely unacceptable. We do not want to see a repeat of that again this year."
"I want to credit the leadership of the College for providing us with a solid budget that balances the challenges of a bad economy with the needs of our student population," said Legislator Thomas Loughran (D, 14th District) who chairs the Community Enrichment Committee that oversees the College. "by not including tuition increases the College recognizes the needs of our students to obtain a quality education and the County, as the College sponsor, must do all it can to support this budget and the opportunity it offers for so many Erie County residents."
In addition to passing this year's budget for the College the Legislature also passed a resolution calling on the County Executive to restore the full funding amount to the College adopted in last year's budget. The resolution calls on the Budget Director to make the payment to ECC in the amount of $208,539 no later than July 6, 2010.
