LEGISLATOR LOUGHRAN, ENERGY AND ENVIRONMENT COMMITTEE
TO RECEIVE HUNTLEY GENERATION PLANT PLANS SEPTMEBER 21
The NRG Energy Corporation will present plans to modernize the Huntley Electric Power Generation Plant to the Erie County Legislature Energy and Environment Committee, under its chairman, Legislator Thomas Loughran (D-Amherst, Cheektowaga, Tonawanda) and any interested citizens at its 2 p.m. Thursday, September 21, meeting in the Legislature Chambers on the Fourth Floor at 92 Franklin Street, Buffalo.
The plans include applying for a competitive funding program managed by the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority. The program would help defray a portion of the $1.5 billion project. The New York State Energy Research and Development Authority is seeking energy production upgrades that meet certain electric technology generation and emission standards.
NRG will respond and is looking for opportunities to build support for the Huntley project, which will use IGCC technology. NRG's approach will significantly reduce pollution (greenhouse gases), increase megawatt production and modernize technology. This will help secure Western New York's economy from energy shortages and reduce our dependence on foreign oil.
The project will employ local construction workers and create additional operational positions while retraining the current workforce. Details about the project will be presented at the Energy and Environment Committee meeting. The public is invited and encouraged to attend this meeting.
