From the desk of the Supervisor of the Town of Newstead,
The first of the year brings the opportunity for a fresh start and a chance to move in new directions and accomplish new things. It is with great enthusiasm I look forward to working with the new board in 2008. I plan on continuing to give the public a six month update and look into the future as to the town's activities.
Since my last report in July 2007, some of the items that have been addressed are:
- Continue to develop the website to provide information to our residents.
- Completion of the final paperwork for reimbursement of the October storm of 2006 clean-up. The State was extremely happy with the final report
- Completion of the Joint Facilities study with the Village of Akron
- Completing the Town Code update.
- Received a $ 20,500 grant to upgrade the Newstead Community Center (Denio) basement which will be worked on in the spring of 2008.
- Passed laws concerning windmills, outdoor furnaces and right to farm.
- Increased the Senior Citizen exemptions for the first time in 6 years by 43%
- Worked with Erie County and the Village of Akron in getting the Crittenden Rd Bridge re-opened in October 2007
- Produced a budget that reflected a decrease in the tax rate to help offset the Assessment increase for 2008.
- negotiated and signed new long term Refuse Contract and Emergency Medical Services Contract.
- Continued Rural Transit Services for 2008
- Purchased a new Highway truck replacing one that was 13 years old.
- Submitted a grant with the Village of Akron for Mitigation of Murder Creek along Brooklyn Street. If the grant is received, it will be the first step in stabilizing the bank behind the South side of Main Street in the Village of Akron along Brooklyn Street.
Some items to address in 2008-
- Consolidation of services with the Village (archive storage, Police Garage, CEO, Court system). Review possible joint facilities building.
- Review status of Senior Center
- Work on continued completion of town wide water
- Review Telecommunications status
- Review status of the Limerick hall
- Search for grant addressing the Newstead Library Basement, Parks, Bike path, Assessor/Bldg Department
- Look at town services (possible training for all staff)
- Review several current planning issues including route 5 rezoning.
- Purchase new computer equipment and review software packages.
This is an aggressive list that will take time to review. It is my wish that residents will get involved and assist us in this endeavor. The town is always open to suggestions to better our community.
I can be reached by phone at 542-1231 and/or leave a message. I will get back to you ASAP. I can also be reached on my cell phone (574-9435) anytime 8 am to 8 pm, Monday through Saturday.
