History
Sprague Brook Park was acquired by using state and federal aid programs to assume title to more than 2,200 acres of parkland (including Eighteen Mile, Beeman's Creek, Larkin Woods) in May 1963. In Feb 1964, Erie County bought 86 acres of land for expansion in the Town of Sardinia and Concord for $1,500.
Park Features
Sprague is a park of hidden treasures. An outstanding place to see wildflowers, migratory birds, and deer. This park offers the outdoor enthusiast a multitude of diverse and exciting adventures. There are fine hiking trails to catch a glimpse of:
- Plant Life
American Beech, Hawthorn, Butternut Hickory, Eastern Cottonwood, Sycamore, Black Walnut, Virginia Bluebells, Ostrich Ferns, Goutweed, Japanese Knotweed, Lesser Celandine, Red Pine, Scotch Pine, European Pine, Norway Spruce, Staghorn Sumac.
- Mammals
Porcupine, fox, white tail deer, snowshoe hare, and raccoons.
- Birds
Birders can find pileated woodpeckers, songbirds, robins, waterfowl, Herons, geese and ducks
- Water Life
Plenty of frogs and salamanders, bass, sunfish, and bluegills.
Park Facilities
Activities:
With over 27 campsites, Sprague Brook has a lot to offer the recreational camper amidst its towering trees and freshwater lake. The Boy Scout and Girl scouts make their summer came here.
- Summer
Family Camping (fires only in designated areas) fishing, hiking trails and summer family picnics. Plenty of new children's areas, 3 tennis courts and 2 baseball diamonds.
- Winter:
First there was cross-country skiing, now there is a new winter sports activity that is gaining increasing popularity in Buffalo WNY: snow-shoe trekking. There are also snowmobile trails, tobogganing & sledding.
