GRAND ISLAND MAN ARRESTED FOR DRIVING WHILE ABILITY IMPAIRED BY DRUGS

October 7, 2009- 10:53 PM- Sheriff Tim Howard reports that a Grand Island man was arrested and charged with driving while his ability was impaired by drugs after being involved in a single vehicle accident. Jeffrey Drew, age 18, of Whitehaven Road, was cutting through the Grand Island Plaza when he drove his 2002 Ford Ranger pickup truck into a concrete block wall at the rear of the building, leaving a four foot wide hole in it.

Responding deputies found Drew to be in possession of a small quantity of suspected marijuana, which he admitted to having smoked just minutes earlier. Deputies Mike Haug and Dan Milbrandt, who investigated the accident, requested that a DRE (Drug Recognition Expert) be brought to the scene to assist them.

Deputy Daryl Demari, who is the Erie County Sheriff's Office Certified DRE, responded to evaluate the driver. Demari determined that Mr. Drew was under the influence of a drug and at that time he was arrested and did submit blood and urine samples for analysis. He was also found to be operating his vehicle while his license was suspended for failing to answer a summons in the Town of Tonawanda, which prompted a charge of aggravated unlicensed operation.

He was also charged with unlawful possession of marijuana. His vehicle, which was extensively damaged, was owed and a 12 hour hold placed on it. Drew was released to a third patty on traffic summonses pending a future date in Grand island Court.
