C.) Strategies:

  • The strategies are based on pro-active police work, education, and awareness.
  • Establish a strong and consistent message strategy via SHIELD 2002 for the public that involves all areas of the Erie County Sheriff's Office.
  • Strengthen internal communications among employees so that they feel the sense of pride that will ultimately lead to better serving the community.
  • Utilize existing and potential partnerships with community groups and other agencies to promote the mission of the Erie County Sheriff's Office, ultimately leading to safer communities.

Media Relations

The Erie County Sheriff's Office will maintain an atmosphere of openness with both the public and the news media. We recognize that a well-informed, supportive and cooperative public is absolutely essential to successful policing. Public trust and confidence in law enforcement are enhanced by open and honest communication with the citizenry. The news media is an effective and efficient means of assisting in such communications. The Sheriff's Office also recognizes the obligation of providing accurate and timely information concerning its activities. It is committed to doing so and welcome public inquiries. All personnel, consistent with this policy, must cooperate with members of the media regarding official operations and activities since all share in the responsibility of maintaining the public's trust.

Members of the news media must always be treated with dignity, respect and honesty. They must also be treated fairly and impartially. Nonetheless, there may be times when information in our possession cannot be released to the news media in order to protect the integrity of an on-going investigation or because of other restrictions provided by law. (See General Order: 01-01 Public Information/Communications).

Training Advisory Committee

Training is the hallmark of professionalism. In an effort to enhance and ensure adequate, timely and effective training, a training Advisory Committee was formed in the month of June, 2000.

The committee has voluntary members from each division and meets at least quarterly, with the training staff, to assess training needs and training effectiveness. This committee also submits appropriate recommendations on training matters to the Sheriff.

Citizen Satisfaction

A random citizen satisfaction survey follow-up on some calls is presently being addressed jointly by the Erie County Sheriff's Office and the Criminal Justice Department of Buffalo State College.

The information we receive from the public will help us shape our agency's goals and enable us to plan for the future. The information collected may also assist us in addressing problems with the delivery of service or personnel issues.
